Join Us for Loudoun County’s Favorite Night Gravel Ride

Get ready to light up the night and roll through western Loudoun County’s most beautiful rural farm roads at the VeloPigs Beer & Bicycle Social Club’s 5th Annual Oink At The Moon. This non-competitive nighttime gravel ride has become one of the most anticipated cycling events in Loudoun County—a unique mix of adventure, camaraderie, and pure fun.

Oink At The Moon: Our Roots

Oink At The Moon began as a single charity challenge in October 2020, when VeloPigs founder Kasey Clark set out to ride every gravel road in Loudoun County—over 285 miles—in a single day. The ride raised significant funds for America’s Routes, a Loudoun-based nonprofit dedicated to preserving the county’s historic roads. In 2021, the VeloPigs honored Kasey’s accomplishment by organizing the first official night gravel century—and it’s been growing ever since. Now in its fifth year, Oink At The Moon stands as a true grassroots tradition and one of the most beloved events on the local cycling calendar.

Hosted by a Fellow VeloPig

This year’s event is hosted by longtime VeloPig and ride leader Brian Holesapple, who is graciously opening his property near Philomont for both the start and finish of the ride. Even if you’ve ridden Loudoun’s gravel countless times, experiencing these same roads under moonlight transforms them completely—offering new perspectives, deeper camaraderie, and a thrilling sense of exploration.

Ride Details

Road Conditions: A mix of paved and gravel roads, ranging from smooth hardpack to deep, loose sections.
Lighting & Safety: Helmets, headlights, and taillights are required. Riders must follow all traffic laws and act as ambassadors for gravel cycling.
Route Markings: Routes will be unmarked; GPS files will be emailed to registered riders.
Tire Recommendations: Minimum 32mm width; 38mm or wider is ideal. Tubeless tires are strongly encouraged—flat repairs in the dark are no fun!

Route Options

New this year, we’re offering three route choices to suit different paces and fitness levels:

Party Pace – 26 Miles

Average speed: 12–14 mph. A relaxed yet spirited ride perfect for social riders and those new to night gravel adventures.

Business Casual – 42 Miles

Average speed: 14–15 mph. A balanced tempo combining steady effort and good conversation.

Business Class – 63 Miles

Average speed: 16+ mph. Fast, focused, and ideal for experienced riders seeking a true challenge.

Each group will have a designated ride leader to help set the pace and provide guidance. Unlike the Saturday VeloPigs rides, these are drop rides, so riders should select a route appropriate for their ability. Groups will roll out in five-minute intervals, so please stage 5–10 minutes before your start time. Longer routes will stop briefly at the Safeway in Middleburg for hydration and snacks. The VeloPigs proudly follow the Mullet Protocol for all rides: Business at the front, party at the back.

Rest Stops

There are no official rest stops. However, the 42- and 63-mile routes pass the Safeway in Middleburg, where riders can purchase hydration and nutrition. Bring your own supplies or cash for on-route purchases.

After-Ride Celebration

When you roll back into Purcellville, the real party begins! Enjoy pizza and beer (21+) provided after the ride. Receive a commemorative VeloPigs event patch with your entry. Relax, share stories, and celebrate another successful Oink At The Moon under the stars.

Support and Safety

Pre-Ride Mechanical Support: Provided by Plum Grove Cyclery, the VeloPigs’ official shop sponsor.
SAG Support: Available for riders who experience mechanical issues and can’t finish the route.
Fitness & Readiness: Riders are responsible for ensuring they have the proper fitness, equipment, and bike-handling skills for their chosen route.
Registration: Changes or transfers may be made up to the day before the event. Refunds are not available.
Financial Assistance: If you’d like to participate but need help covering the registration cost, contact the Event Director—no Pig left behind!

Pro Tip: Dress for the Finish, Not the Start

It may feel mild when you roll out, but temperatures drop fast after sunset. Dress for the cold temperatures you’ll face at the end of the ride—not the warm ones at the beginning. Trust us on this one.
